So in response to a comment on the post I started to wonder whether there was a difference between the Wardrobe (English) vs Closet (American). According to wikipedia, a wardrobe, also known as an armoire from the French, is a standing closet used for storing clothes. Whilst a a closet (especially in North American usage) is a small and enclosed space used for general storage or hanging clothes. However what makes me laugh the most is this:
That is in current British usage, a "wardrobe" can also be built-in, and the word "cupboard" can be used to refer to a closet. But in Elizabethan and Middle English, closet referred to a larger room in which a person could sit and read in private, but now refers to a small room in general which is often referred to as a toilet.
I just hope someone (to be unnamed) uses each correctly!
